Veneer:

Even well seasoned timber is subject to shrinkage, casting, twisting and splitting, especially in centrally in centrally heated spaces; and many solid timbers have an irregular microstructure which, in shaped work, can shorten the grain and reduce their strength. Use of veneers keeps all the visual characteristics of solid timber wood but with almost no negative effects that appear at use of solid wood.

Laminate:

The increased level of durability makes HPL the one of the top resistant materials for use on horizontal applications including table tops and work surfaces. HPL is also suitable for vertical surfaces, including cabinet doors and drawer fronts. As for melamine there is also a large variety of decors available for HPL to complement any possible designer creation. However HPL has certain limitation of application at curves and shaped furniture.
